Homemade Maple Granola with Walnuts, Dates and Pomegranate infused Dried Cranberries

Homemade maple granola with walnuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, dried cranberries, pomegranate

I’m new to the homemade granola trend but admit I’ve bought a fair share of granola bars for my kids when they were growing up. Though they seemed to like them I could never get onboard with them for myself but admit because they included the world ‘granola’ I convinced myself that they were somehow good for them. I’m not going to beat myself up now if that wasn’t true but after recently making my own batch of maple granola with my choice of fruits and nuts for the first time; I could beat myself up for not having done this before. Easy hardly qualifies for the effort and the results? Well, nothing I’ve ever purchased from any store can compare to a granola that I make with my pick of ingredients that I love. And I’ve been loving this for breakfast with yogurt and fresh fruit. Loving it a lot!

I’m relatively new to yogurt pretty much the same way I’m new to granola. I never got yogurt either; by that I don’t mean I never bought it but like the granola bars my experience was prepared servings with fruit and flavor combinations my children liked; for me it was never anything special.

Enter Greek yogurt. The difference is visual and certainly palatable. Creamy and rich and I’m in love with it. I’ve been using Greek Yogurt for some time in recipes when sour cream or mayonnaise is called for with great results. My daughter Lauren recently introduced me to The Greek Gods Yogurt with Honey. OMG…Oh My Greek! Subtle but amazing.

I recently won a case of Chobani Greek Yogurt and asked for the honey yogurt. It was good but the honey was far too subtle after falling in love with The Greek Gods brand. The fat content is a bit high though so I either indulge in my fave or add a bit more honey to the Chobani brand if lower fat is my mantra of the day! They are both typically in my fridge and one or the other is now a breakfast staple.

I’ve been buying my granola mix from Sunflower Market and while happy enough with it; after a snow storm last week had me decide to not go out, I recalled that someone had tweeted the basic recipe for granola recently and decided to give it a shot. I had never actually put together that while called granola…it’s really just baked oatmeal. And other stuff. Good stuff!

I made my first batch last week and it was just OK. Only OK because I believe I may have used a container of Quick Oatmeal and wondering if that is why the edges started to burn at the recommended time; which resulted in my having to pitch way too much from that cookie tray. Even then the part deemed good enough to keep was a bit too brown. I’ve eaten some of it but decided it was a great treat for my pup and it was time to try again.

Most recipes call for honey and canola oil but I wanted to try maple syrup with walnut oil and got creative with an assortment of other goodies too. That’s what I love…you follow a basic recipe for the oats, some liquid and seasonings and can really go nuts (literally) with your own ingredients. I love dates and am just obsessed with the new Craisins that are infused with pomegranate juice so this batch will include those. I decided to add some spices too so cinnamon and nutmeg both went in the mix. I also included some sunflower seeds and sesame seeds but I’ve seen flax and dried apricots and dried blueberries and, well, the opportunities are endless!

It was somehow a bit prophetic that I made my first batch of homemade granola the day after meeting another local blogger from Boulder; you know Boulder of the hippy, granola, earth child reputation! Really; I promise, @BoulderLocavore (http://boulderlocavore.blogspot.com) did not make it a requirement of our new friendship!

Thanks for sharing this recipe! I can’t wait to try it out. I love the versatility of granola – adding (or subtracting) so many different things to change it up :)

I just started making granola last year and continue to be amazed at just how much better it is than store bought. I’ll have to try your version.

I’m late to the party too and I know it’s simple and all…but I now look forward to my breakfast. Used to be Cheerios day after day; this is so much nicer! Any favorite flavor combinations?

I made a tropical one with coconut, dried pineapple, almonds and citrus honey that was great.

there’s a first time for everything! tho it will probably never be quite as good as that ONE first time. I especially like the pomegranate element.

Hehe…or maybe actually better? Practice makes perfect you know??

I love to make granola – we have not bought it in years- just got hooked on being able to create your ideal combination and could never go back. This looks great!

That’s why I’m going to love this, already have a couple of versions I’m going to make this weekend so I have alternatives.

I make homemade granola about twice a week. My family loves my Chai scented granola the best. I eat it every morning with some available organic fruit and kefir. My husband likes it with Bulgarian yogurt and my kids take it to school , plain, to snack on. We are big yogurt eaters, too. I bake a lot with the low fat Greek style yogurt. It is a great substitute for sour cream.
I’ll take Toni’s granola recipe with me to try. Hope she will be able to attend our next meet up. Can’t wait to meet her in person.

Delicious!!! This is one of my favorite breakfasts and snacks!! Your granola is inspiring me to whip up a batch – I am thinking dried tart cherries, pecans and of course, maple syrup!!!

I always have plain greek yogurt in my fridge too!!!

Really the thing I love the MOST? How ridiculously easy it is. From thought to finish in less than half an hour? Perfect isn’t it?

So glad the earthy aura of my berg is rubbing off. I too have a wonderful recipe for granola on my blog and actually make it ‘raw’ in a dehydrator (can only imagine your response). Let us not forget Bon Appetite named Boulder the Foodiest Town in the U.S. last October! Hope it was yummy.

My response? Of course you do! I do remember that article and how the exercise almost seemed to kill him!

I am also a Greek yogurt fanatic! I love playing with granola combos and recently made a Chocolate Walnut granola….oooohhh!! I layered it with yogurt and it was a winner with my family. I ended up making a bunch for Christmas gifts then!

Congratulations on your first batch of granola! I love making it at home, but I have hard time controlling myself around it so I don’t make it that often. After trying some delicious granola from Bouchon bakery (not very sweet, but still good because of all the dried fruit), I’ve been in the mood to try some more recipes. This one’s going on the list! BTW. The Alice’s Tea Cup Cookbook has a recipe that has 2 teaspoons of ground vanilla tea tossed in with it. I almost made a batch today, but forgot to pick up the tea.

I love homemade granola because you can make it with better ingredients such as maple, honey and brown sugar. Commercial granola is sometimes oversweetened. This is an awesome meal!!

I’m so with you…and I love adding some spices too. I make all food gifts for the holidays so this is already planned for next year. So easy and so good!
